Description
Helianthus angustifolius
A native perennial sunflower, upright with a rough, hairy stems and narrowly lance shaped, mid green leaves, to 8 inch long. Blooming in early autumn, with daisy-like flower heads, 3 inch across with yellow ray florets and purple disk florets. A beautiful show stopper with a mass of golden yellow that can be seen from a far distance.
Grow in moderately fertile, humus rich, moist but well drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Swamp Sunflowers need long, hot summers to flower well. Top dress annually with compost or well-rotted manure, and divide every 2-4 years. Prune back in mid summer so plant will not be leggy when blooming in the fall.
