Hercules Club is a native, spiny, aromatic, rounded crowned, deciduous tree with spreading branches and knobby trunk. The leaves are shiny and once-divided. Clusters of small white flowers are borne at the branch tips. Fruit-bearing plants have small green to reddish fruits in mid- to late summer. The fruits split open to expose shiny black seeds. Is a very showy tree that’s underused in the landscape. The bitter, aromatic bark of the Toothache Tree used as a remedy for toothaches by chewing the bark or foliage numbing the pain, the seeds are eaten by birds. The plant has spines or sharp edges; use extreme caution when handling.
